The objective of the forum is to bring together statistical practitioners and data users to discuss recent theoretical developments in statistics that would address our country?s new and emerging needs as well as come up with ideas towards the improvement of sectoral statistics. Furthermore, it will serve as a venue to recommend ways to further enhance the work of the PSS and a means to build statistical capacities of the public and private sectors. The convention is a good opportunity for statistics professionals in the public, private, and academe, as well as other practitioners, students and interested individuals, to share and communicate the results of their statistical researches, case studies, and/or experiences.

2009 is an FIES year. This is when the National Statistics Office (NSO) collects in two survey rounds, income and expenditures data of families, which the NSCB will use to find out if poverty incidence has improved or deteriorated since 2006. The NSCB targets the release of the preliminary 2009 official poverty statistics sometime in 2010. Just before then, some government officials directly responsible for poverty reduction programs could be expected to, in the language of a President, get wee weed up! Not to worry though, because there is time left for us to take decisive action to reduce poverty - before the MDG reckoning in 2015 and before the national elections in May 2010. But we must learn to use statistics, and our action must be sustained beyond 2009 for lasting and meaningful poverty reduction.

Typhoons seen to push up 2009 Philippine remittances

MANILA (Reuters) - Remittances to the Philippines could grow 5 percent this year, higher than earlier estimates, as Filipinos overseas send more money home to help their families recover from typhoon wreckage, a senior government official said at the weekend.

Remittances, a driver of consumer spending that fuels more than two-thirds of GDP, have held up well despite the global economic crisis, growing 3.8 percent in the seven months to July from last year.

"(A) 5 percent (growth) is possible," Augusto Santos, head of the economic planning agency told reporters. "OFWs (overseas Filipino workers) are scattered worldwide and OFWs tend to send more during calamities."

A scientist from the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) said the archipelago is moving towards the Asian mainland by approximately seven centimeters per year.
